However, there are a few BMX restorers who have painstakingly attempted to decipher these multi-digit mysteries. A big part of buying, rebuilding and restoring old BMX bikes, is knowing exactly how old they are. It seemed nobody figured out how to read the serial numbers. Generally the year and month of build was stamped as the first part of the serial number. The first number 6 relates to the year — It is assumed that the G is the production number. There were a few variations on this type of serial number, but usually they were pretty easy to work out. I spent quite a bit of time looking into these numbers on a few of my bikes as well as checking against other Mongoose BMX owners to see if my serial number crack was right. It seems to hold up and here it is.

With an estimated 15, bicycle manufacturers, the odds are stacked against me recognizing yours; in any case, I do not claim to be an expert, just an assiduous recorder of information. My hobby usually takes a backseat. Insomnia is my saving grace, otherwise there would be no time for any of this. My purpose for creating these databases is simple. Thus, for example, an apprentice mechanic was handed down an invaluable unwritten guide to repairing vehicles that could not be learned at college nor from books, because, as well as specific information about various models, it helped a youngster understand the way they were designed and built.

Similarly, to learn about vintage bicycles, we ask questions of our elders in the hobby. The key point here is that the elders who were around while our favourite vintage machines were still on the road are no longer with us, the last of them having passed on in the past thirty years or so. We study year-old magazines to see when certain new innovations were first reviewed it helps us date bicycles with similar features , read correspondence of the time to try to understand contemporary views and opinions, research old catalogues, meet fellow enthusiasts, help each other with restorations, ride our old bikes as much as possible, and work with our elders to pick up tips and wisdom.

If you can help in any way by contributing to this research, please get in touch. My email is embedded in the picture below. This surprises many people. I try to explain as politely as possible that such a service does not exist, and they are often abusive as a result.

Mongoose has long been a name synonymous with bicycles and since the company was the first to produce a complete BMX bike, it knows what enthusiasts and fans want. Three years ago, Mongoose decided to create its own event, one that was unlike any other. It was set up in a team format, with Mongoose riders as captains, picking their team much the same way dodgeball is picked on the recess yard.

Since then, the event has continued to grow — and this year proved to be one of the best BMX events of the summer. The Mongoose sponsored four-day event once again returned to Camp Woodward, knowing full-well that it had plenty of riders, environments and fans at its fingertips. But there was more to it than that; this was an immersive, up close and personal view of the sport. Before any of the events took place however, captains for each team had to be chosen.

Each rider has their own unique style, as well as their own strengths and weaknesses when it comes to the three disciplines — dirt, park, street. To get things started, Mongoose Jam kicked off with the Woodward Camper Competition, a chance for some of the best riders spending the week at the site to show their skills and make it to one of the teams. For the five who advanced from the competition, it was a dream come true, as they were chosen to represent a team for the remainder of the jam and picked up some sweet prizes.

Note: In the early days of professional racing, prior to , many tracks offered small purse prize money to the older racers of an event, even before the official sanctioning bodies offered prize money in formal divisions themselves. Hence, some early “professionals” like Stu Thomsen who turned “pro” in at age 16, would race for small amounts of money at track events when offered.

For the sake of consistency and standardization, noted professional firsts are for the first pro races involving prize money offered by official BMX sanctioning bodies and not independent track events. Professional firsts are also on the national level unless otherwise indicated. Started Racing: or Perry Kramer himself is vague on this point. This is why, during the early years of the pro division, the national number one racer of a sanctioning body could be either an amateur or professional.

This practice continued until the NBA’s season, when the pros earned separate pro points and a separate pro plate from the amateurs. Note: This listing only denotes the racer’s primary sponsors. At any given time a racer could have numerous co-sponsors. Primary sponsorships can be verified by BMX press coverage and sponsor’s advertisements at the time in question; when possible, exact dates are given.

Depending on point totals of individual racers, winners of Grand Nationals do not necessarily win National titles. Series and one-off Championships are also listed in block.
