Legions of jazz trumpeters consider the Martin Committee a vital addition to any serious horn collection. Miles Davis gave birth to The Cool on one. Chris Botti has compared his acquisition of an early one to finding a rare Jaguar or Porsche in a interview with Smooth Jazz Vibes. Others can copy the tapered tuning slide; the cone-shaped, cornet-like bell; and even the quirky water keys.
But nobody has deciphered the magic formula for that unique tone — so smooth, so dusky, so … jazzy. The Martin mystique has continued to intensify over the years. The Martin Committee was introduced in and quickly became a favorite among jazzers. Either way, Martin decided not to rebuild and instead moved to Elkhart, Indiana, and went to work for the C. Conn Co. By the s, Martin already had a reputation for producing first-rate instruments, and its top-of-the-line model, the Martin Handcraft Imperial, had become the choice of many of the best players of the time.
Exactly who served on that committee remains a matter of some debate. But questions about who served on the committee remain unanswered. Why would Reynolds, founder of the F.

In fact, the worst parts of this multi-faceted modern musical are when it tries to talk down to its audience, or coast on infantile old jokes. Conceived and directed by the inventive off-Broadway director Tina Landau, this is a show that wants to make well-known cartoon characters look and act human. It avoids masks or elaborate make-up. The mountainside they climb is a neat pile of cardboard boxes, on a large-wheeled wagon.
An avalanche uses balloons to represent boulders. The sourpuss Squidward Q. These tailor-made tentacles are the centerpiece of a show-stopping tap dance in the second act.

But the real smackdown pits Warner Brothers’ stable of animated characters, some of which date back more than 70 years, against mild-mannered actors like Brendan Fraser and Jenna Elfman. It is no contest: the animated characters come out on top. Because the actors have to adjust their rhythms to perform in a movie that has the breathless momentum of a Saturday morning cartoon, they’re at a severe disadvantage. Only Steve Martin, as the Dr.

No sooner had I reviewed a collection of German trumpet concertos on Capriccio see above and welcomed an outstanding East German trumpeter than a disc arrived from another remarkable, Swedish, player to add to the pantheon of names to conjure with. On this new issue Philips have balanced Hakan Hardenberger forwardly, to bring his vibrant image right into the living room. He has the advantage too, of an interesting and generous programme, plus the opportunity of giving a first performance of a recently discovered trumpet concerto either by Stamitz or a musician called J.
Holzbogen, but more likely the former. It has been reconstructed by Alan Boustead. Hardenberger opens with the famous Hummel Concerto, played in E major rather than the usual E flat, which makes the work sound bolder and brighter than usual. In the first movement neither he nor Marriner misses the lilt inherent in the dotted rhythm, yet the approach is strong rather than seductive and the brassy brightness of the timbre helps that impression. This is not to imply a lack of refinement, for the slow movement cantilena is floated nicely over the jogging pizzicatos.
The finale with its crisp articulation, fantastic tonguing and tight trills, displays a genial easy bravura, yet overflows with energy and high spirits. The Hertel comes next, the first movement bringing a bright, highly placed trumpet line, the Largo a nice touch of melancholy, shared by Marriner and his players, while the staccato opportunities of the finale are relished with great spirit. The Stamitz or Holzbogen piece seems to have a very doubtful lineage.
Whoever it was written for was a formidable virtuoso: the writing lies consistently in the trumpet’s stratospheric tessitura and includes some awkward leaps. It is an inventive piece, though, and even the second movement Adagio moves along quite briskly; the finale, however, is the most catchy section and Hakan Hardenberger despatches it with panache, having taken all the earlier histrionics in his stride.
