Note: I haven’t kept up with this project over the past few years, but here, at least, is an updated version of the labelography page, with certain links fixed. The principal goal of this project is to assemble an illustrated list of label types found on home recording discs of the mid-twentieth century. A further and perhaps more important goal is to produce a dating guide for home recording discs.

Obviously there is no way to determine the date of an undated home recording with certainty based only on the label type.

In , the Radio Corporation of America RCA purchased the Victor Talking Machine Company , then the world’s largest manufacturer of phonographs including the famous ” Victrola ” and phonograph records in British English , “gramophone records”.

The company then became RCA Victor. The format was abandoned by , and two-speed turntables were no longer offered, but some Program Transcriptions lingered in the Victor record catalog until the end of the s. During the early part of the Depression, RCA Victor made a number of attempts to create a successful cheap label to compete with the “dime store labels” Perfect , Oriole , Banner , Melotone , etc. The first was the short-lived “Timely Tunes” label in sold at Montgomery Ward.

For true blue phonograph collectors, identifying an authentic Victor phonograph is never difficult. This include providing a unique serial number for the majority of their phonographs. Each Victor phonograph is designed with a metal dataplate. It is placed either on or near the motorboard for models that have lids ; on the side part of the phonograph for most models with external horn and those that are lidless ; or beneath the turntable for the cheaper models and some that were launched in the 20s.

In order to view some plates, the turntable should first be lifted straight up and then off the motorboard. Each dataplate has a serial number found on the right and a model identification that is stamped on the left.

The Victor Company and its successors made no Gilbert and Sullivan recordings of any note, except the three sets on so-called long playing discs of the Victor Light Opera Company’s H. None of these have discernible matrix numbers. The Victor releases of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas were imported and repressed from the original Gramophone Company matrices.
